Well Intervention Market Dynamics

Driver :  Growing need for maximizing the production potential of mature oil & gas fields

According to a survey by Halliburton, one of the leading players in the well intervention market, mature fields account for about 70.0% of the global oil & gas production, with many in the secondary or tertiary production phases. The average recovery factor is 70.0% for gas and 35.0% for oil. However, the recovery rates may decline further due to geological characteristics, resource constraints, or operational inefficiencies of old technologies. A mature field is characterized by a decline in overall production after primary recovery efforts or when easily accessible hydrocarbons are recovered. These wells are far from being a decaying resource, as they are likely to cater to the rising demand for energy in the future. The major difficulty with the mature fields is that their oil production is uneconomical, or the operator faces technological limitations to recover oil reserves.

Mature fields are often equipped with old equipment and infrastructure. They produce more water than oil, which raises potential environmental issues. Well intervention techniques enhance the recovery of mature fields and extend their peak production period. New well intervention technologies enable high percentages of hydrocarbons to be produced economically in mature reservoirs.

The major oil & gas companies have shifted their focus toward developing new tools and techniques required to exploit bypassed pay zones in mature reserves instead of drilling new wells, which is a cost-intensive process. They emphasize increasing recovery and extending the life of mature fields, hence exceeding the natural production levels.

The rise in oil and gas production has resulted in the rapid depletion of new fields, which eventually has led to an increase in the number of mature fields. The recovery potential of these depleting resources is enormous, with 80.0% of estimated reserves found in the Middle East and North Africa, 43.0% in Asia Pacific, and 24.0% in Latin America.

Upstream companies in Europe demand the latest technologies for well intervention operations. More than 60.0% of the oilfields in Norway and the UK have become mature and require well intervention services to increase the production of hydrocarbons in the reservoirs.

Restraints: Volatility in oil prices and decline in upstream capital investments

The volatility in oil prices and the decline in upstream capital investment have significantly impacted the global well intervention market across regions like North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific (APAC). Fluctuations in oil prices directly affect exploration and production activities, prompting oil and gas companies to seek cost-effective solutions to maintain or enhance production levels. As a result, the demand for well intervention services increases as operators focus on optimizing existing wells rather than investing in new developments.

In North America, where shale reservoirs have revolutionized the energy landscape, the need for well intervention is particularly pronounced. With the decline in upstream capital investment, operators are turning to interventions to maximize recovery from existing wells. Similarly, in Europe and the APAC region, where mature fields are prevalent, the impact of oil price volatility and reduced investment is driving the market for well intervention services. Companies are leveraging these services to extend the life of aging wells and mitigate production declines, contributing to the growth of the well intervention market.

Opportunity: Increasing oil and gas well  discoveries

The surge in oil and gas well discoveries presents a significant portunity for the well intervention market across various regions, including North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific (APAC). As oil and gas exploration activities uncover new reserves, operators face the challenge of maximizing production from these discoveries to meet global energy demands. This necessitates the implementation of well intervention techniques to enhance well productivity, prolong asset lifespan, and optimize reservoir performance

In North America, the abundance of shale formations has spurred a wave of well discoveries, driving the demand for intervention services to maintain and boost production levels. Similarly, in Europe and the APAC region, the exploration of offshore and onshore fields has led to new discoveries, prompting oil and gas operators to invest in well intervention solutions to capitalize on these finds. Overall, the increasing number of oil and gas well discoveries worldwide presents a lucrative growth opportunity for the well intervention market, fueling technological advancements and market expansion.

Challenges: Complex well intervention operations in harsh high-pressure and high temperature (HPHT) environmental conditions

Oil and gas reserves are finite resources that are depleting as production activities are constantly rising. Thus, the upstream operators have increased their focus on challenging geographic conditions such as High-Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) wells. The commercial viability of uneconomic gas reserves and the use of thermal recovery techniques have increased the requirement for operations in HPHT wells in the Gulf of Mexico Kvitebjørn, Kristin and Huldra fields, and the North Sea, among other regions. However, the drilling of HPHT exploratory wells involves high-risk and cost-intensive operations, which is expected to be a challenge for well intervention service providers.

Ultradeep wells may reach depths beyond 10,700 m, and their hydrostatic pressure can exceed 30,000 psi. The drilling assemblies, logging while drilling (LWD) tools, wireline logging equipment, well testing tools, completion hardware, and well intervention tools are exposed to these extreme pressures and may lead to equipment failure and possible obstruction of the wellbore. Metals and alloys commonly used in aerospace and nuclear power energy and sealing technologies have been adopted by upstream operators to mitigate the effects of high pressure. However, the use of these materials in oil & gas applications is often constrained by wellbore size limitations, particularly in deepwater wells. It is challenging for companies to design logging, drilling tools, and other well intervention equipment that withstands high-pressure extremes and also fit into small diameter wellbores of ultradeep wells. Similarly, companies may find it challenging to develop well intervention tools that require electronic components designed specifically for high-temperature environments. In HPHT wells the consequences of equipment failure are costlier than that of a conventional well. Therefore, before field application, new products and services designed for hostile environments must be rigorously tested and qualified to withstand the tougher downhole conditions.

Various codes and practices have been established to provide guidelines while performing intervention activities in HPHT wells. For instance, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (US) defines the code of Federal Regulations for the well completion of HPHT wells in the Gulf of Mexico. 30 CFR 250.804, a practice under these regulations, demands special requirements for subsurface safety valves and related equipment installed in the HPHT environment.

In 2012, the American Petroleum Institute (API) Technical Report 1PER15K-1 Protocol for Verification and Validation of High-Pressure High-Temperature Equipment defined a high-pressure well as having a pressure greater than 15,000 psi and temperature above 350°F (177°C). The standards are related to the design specifications for equipment and acceptable materials that can be used in HPHT operations. In addition, it provides specifications for the testing of well control and completion hardware to ensure safety, suitability, and integrity.

Similarly, ONGC, the national oil company of India, has classified HPHT wells as specially challenged wells, with pressure above 10–15 ksi and temperature above 350°F. Such wells have special cementing slurry to keep them isolated.

The study involved major activities in estimating the current size of the Well Intervention market. Exhaustive secondary research was done to collect information on the peer and parent markets. The next step was to validate these findings, assumptions, and sizing with industry experts across the value chain through primary research. Both top-down and bottom-up approaches were employed to estimate the complete market size. Thereafter, market breakdown and data triangulation were used to estimate the market size of the segments and subsegments.

Secondary Research

This research study on the Well Intervention market involved the use of extensive secondary sources, directories, and databases, such as the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), Canada Energy Regulator (CER), Norwegian Offshore Directorate, North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA), National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA), and Saudi Arabian Standards Organization, to identify and collect information useful for a technical, market-oriented, and commercial study of the global Well Intervention market. The other secondary sources included annual reports, press releases & investor presentations of companies, white papers, certified publications, articles by recognized authors, manufacturer associations, trade directories, and databases.

Primary Research

Well intervention encompasses various operations aimed at enhancing or restoring production in wells, addressing issues like flow restrictions, reservoir changes, sand production, or mechanical failures. Costs escalate as offshore activities expand into deeper waters and encounter more complex conditions. Techniques like wireline units for light intervention and CT or HWO units for medium intervention offer cost-effective alternatives, particularly for live wells. Platform well intervention utilizes equipment brought onto the platform, while subsea intervention, although more costly, is mitigated by specialized vessels and innovative subsea systems. The industry trend favors cost reduction through dedicated intervention vessels and advanced subsea technologies.

Market Definition

Oil and gas wells, at some point, require maintenance, repair, or replacement to extend their operational life. This is accomplished with the help of well intervention services. Well intervention is any remedial operation undertaken on oil or gas wells to restore or enhance the production of fluids (oil and gas). It can be done while carrying out well completion, production, or well abandonment procedures. It is performed due to flow restrictions in a well, changes in reservoir characteristics, sand production, mechanical failure, or to provide access to additional hydrocarbon reserves. A typical well intervention service includes operations such as slackline, wireline, coiled tubing, and hydraulic workover, whereas the specific downhole applications are well surveillance and diagnostics, implementation of reservoir management techniques, complete repair and re-entry drilling to access new producing intervals, and abandonment and well evaluation. Well intervention services can be performed on onshore or offshore oil and gas fields.
